The Making of a Whispe – Perlustrating

Historically Speaking
Having survived a long history of negative connotation, the term, “witch” is being used more and more in everyday life. Witch derives from the Old English noun, “wicca” meaning a male witch and “wice” meaning a female witch or sorceress. In the late-1500s to mid-1600s in Eastern Europe and early colonial America, witches were named purely based on societal suspicion. For example, if a woman was outspoken, she could be called a witch. If she owned land or had a great deal of assets, she might have been accused of being a witch. If a woman was widowed or a spinster, she was considered out of the ordinary, therefore, she could have been deemed a witch. This negative stigma is generally viewed as outdated.

Modern Day
So, what does it mean to be called a witch today? The path to practicing witchcraft is unique to each person and frequently entails many twists and turns along the way. As one begins the journey, they may explore different religions and forms of spirituality. Scouring the internet for guidance and understanding before beginning to craft their practice. Some choose to utilize certain magick sources such as crystals and/or herbs while others fully immerse themselves in the traditional practices. With no universally accepted scripture or regimented mode of practice, the only broadly accepted tenet is “Harm none and do as you will.” It is the ability to craft a practice that is personalized to one’s lifestyle and beliefs within their comfort level that continues to make witchcraft popular today.

Personally, I feel like I have always been like the square peg. My exploration into the world of magick and witchcraft is no different. As I began to analyze the traditions, rituals, and practices, I realized that I was close to finally finding just the right spot for me. Sometimes one little corner simply wouldn’t fit, other times there is just no fitting in no matter how hard I try. That’s when I decided to create my own niche in the universe and define myself!

First, a name. I worked on this for several months, then finally broke down and called my son, true to his wordsmithing ability he came up with a perfect one the very same day.

WHISPE \ ˈwisp  \ – Whole Harmony Influencer Sending Positive Energies

What’s in a name?
Anyone can be a whispe; it is an inclusive movement. The witchcraft or craft practiced by a whispe is personal to each practitioner. Broadly speaking, one may design their own practice. It is all about the belief that we came from the universe, or a deity or deities if you prefer. The physical form our energy takes on earth begins our life journey and therein one must find their own purpose on this journey. And decide whether raising vibrational awareness, increasing knowledge, strengthening overall being, and helping others navigate their own path is right for them.

It all boils down to harmony with other beings and the earth. If someone identifies as a whispe, then they are one. Whispes come from all walks of life, backgrounds and can identify however they choose. Some have set aside the religious beliefs in which they were raised. While others have blended their religion with their craft. Witchcraft is not exclusive in the belief of deities (goddesses or gods). There are no mandates for attendance, worship, tithe, or rituals. Some practitioners may enjoy the responsibility and framework of performing magick with a structured group, while others may prefer to practice alone. No matter how one chooses to practice, the upside to witchcraft’s recent popularity is that it is becoming more accepted, and more people understand that witchcraft is not synonymous with evil.

A whispe strives to fill every day with positive intent, being one with nature, viewing matters with an open mind, and healing others. They are seers of truths, givers of wisdom, and nurturers of the Earth. Focusing on inner strength, humankind’s place as part of nature, and that the energies contained within all things can be influenced through magick. Those sensitive to the vibrations around them who work toward manipulating energies toward the beneficial goal of “Making the world a better place for all,” this is what it means to be a wispe today.

Simply put, a whispe is aware of their power and puts that power into action, exerting their mental and physical abilities to achieve goals. Magick is not simply “good” or “evil” it is just a tool. One uses the energies and power of nature, the universe, and the mind to attract and affirm positivity and repel or transmute negativity. One should use their talents, skills, and knowledge with positive intent, working with the universe, not against it and striving to understand all things more deeply.
