Perlustrating Candle Magick

Candle Magick harnesses the power of fire, the element of transformation, to bring change. Ever since human beings discovered fire, they have been in awe of its power, and they sought to harness that power, mostly to use its transformative abilities. We continue this ancient tradition when we practice candle magick. You may add the power of Color Magick into your spell by selecting a candle of the color that best suits your intentions. Dressing your candle with botanicals will also add to the power of your spell. From the moment you start planning a spell, you begin the process of casting it. Always keep your intentions good and your attitude positive. Your energy will affect the results. Be sure to always follow fire-safety practices.

Choosing A Candle
The type of candle doesn’t really matter; however, some are easier to dress than others.

· Taper Candles, medium sized work well and are easy to dress, however, the length may cause the candle to burn longer than you have time to oversee.

· Chime-Candles, are fairly easy to dress and have less of a burn time than the tapers.

· Votive Candles, can be challenging to dress, burn time should be considered.

· Tea Light Candles, to dress these you would rub the oil and botanicals across the top of the candle. Burn time is generally short.

· Pillar Candles, these work great for multi-day spells, but are generally a bit of waste for one-day burnings.

Choosing Magickal Correspondences
Part of creating your own spells is learning to select correspondences appropriate to you intention. There are charts and books that may come in handy, and an internet search will yield an abundance of information. While these are helpful resources, the most important thing to know is that the correspondences need to have meaning for you. There may be times where the general accepted correspondence of an item does not feel right to you. You are the one casting the spell, everything should be comfortable for you. A great rule of thumb as you begin to plan your spell is to think “What things do I associate with my intention?”. If something doesn’t feel right for your intention, don’t use it.

Creating The Setting
You should have a safe space when practicing Candle Magic. Choose a well-ventilated area that is within a clear distance from children, pets, fire hazards and obstructions. Be cautious of where you place your items so that nothing is disturbed or knocked over. Make the space meaningful to you. You may already have an altar set up or you may choose to create a space just for your spell. Safely surround your candle with meaningful items, these could be items you already have on hand, repurposed from a thrift store, or picked up from a dollar, grocery or department store. The goal is to make the space special, so that it fosters positive energy that match your intentions.

Imagination & Creativity Are Your Only Limits
Part of the beauty of candle magick is the flexibility. You can design a spell to suit your needs, while keeping it simple with a minimum of supplies. You will be surprised by how helpful Candle Magick can be. Here are some alternate variations.

· Insert a pin in the candle and, instead of letting it burn down to mothering, extinguish it when it gets to the pin.

· Write or draw a picture of your intention and place it under the candle during your spell.

· Write or draw a picture of your intention and light it with the flame of the candle. Safely allowing to burn.

· Some candle spells may include performing the ritual for multiple days in a row. In this case you could extinguish the candle and relight when you continue the spell.

· Some spells require multiple candles, one to represent the caster, one to represent the target, and one or more to represent intentions or situations.
