Palo Santo Wood

Clears Negative Energy, Purification, Good Luck

Palo Santo Wood or “Holy Wood” is a tree that grows on the coast of South America, primarily Ecuador and Peru. It belongs to the same family as Frankincense, Myrrh and Copal. This aromatic wood has a naturally high resin content. Used for its many benefits, healing properties and as spiritual remedy by the Incas and other indigenous people of the source region for centuries.

When used for incense and smudging Palo Santo creates a pleasant, fresh woodsy smelling smoke with hints of citrus with underlying notes of pine and mint. Thought to purge bad spirits, it is also said that it enhances creativity and brings good fortune.

Aromatherapy uses botanicals to foster a sense of safety and protection. Palo Santo’s aroma can focus our attention, unify our senses, and quiet the mind. This is the reason it has been popular among shamans leading ayahuasca ceremonies. The rising smoke of the lit sticks is believed to enter the energy field of the ritual participants to clear misfortune, negative thoughts, and to chase away evil spirits.

It is believed that a tree or fallen branches must rest on the forest floor for 4-10 years before the medicinal and mystical properties of the wood begin to come alive. Only then is the wood cut into manageable pieces and hauled to nearby villages. It is also believed that the branches of the Palo Santo that are felled by lightning have the highest concentration of medicinal and mystical properties.

Palo Santo Wood:

Lighting Palo Santo Incense Sticks: Hold stick at a 45° angle, pointed down toward the flame. Using a candle or other fire source hold incense to flame for 5-10 seconds. Place in a fireproof container. The stick will produce a warm, red ember that releases a terpene-rich healing smoke. Waft the smoke in the air using your hand or a feather. This will not only remove negativity and attracts good fortune.

Burning Palo Santo Incense Chips or Powder on Charcoal Tablet: Using a heat tolerant smudging vessel, carefully light your charcoal tablet. Once the charcoal is ready, place a pinch of Palo Santo on the top (tongs work great for this). Never touch an ignited charcoal tablet with your bare fingers/hands. Palo Santo should immediately start burning and producing a terpene-rich healing smoke. Use tongs to push away any burnt ash when you would like to add more.

Lighting Palo Santo Incense Powder: Place powder in a fireproof container. Make a small mound with powder. Use a match or lighter, hold flame to the powder for 5-10 seconds. Extinguish the flame. The powder will produce a warm, red ember that releases a terpene-rich healing smoke.
