Using Botanical Smudge Blends – Magickal Guide

A Smidge Above
Loose Smudge Blends consist of a single, a mix of botanicals (herbs, spices, plants, flowers, fruits, vegetables, woods and resins). These traditional associations can change depending on personal beliefs and with what an individual associates them with. They are adaptable. Through experience, you may find one thing that traditionally is good for something but works better for you in a different way. And that’s OK! The most important aspect is how you feel. We all relate in different ways, feel free to experiment to find what works best for you.

As you burn the smudge, bask in the fragrance of the smoke, and envision yourself and your space being cleared of energies that do not serve you. Feel the negative vibrations rise and dissipate with the smoke. Feel your heart space being opened, healed, and activated, allowing you to receive all the love that the Universe is waiting to give to you.

Lighting a Charcoal Tablet
Place charcoal tablet in vessel, “bowl” side up (if tablet is indented), light by laying a lit match on the tablet. If your charcoal is being stubborn, use tongs to firmly grasp one side of the tablet. Keep the tablet a safe distance from your face, body, and anything nearby. Use a match, candle or lighter to ignite the side of tablet working the flame towards the “bowl” center.

When the tablet ignites, it should begin making crackling, popping sounds and you may see tiny sparks. Place tablet in your vessel. When it develops a grayish hue, it is ready for use (usually 2-5 minutes). Place a pinch of botanicals, resin, incense, or combination on tablet, (tongs work great for this as well). Smudge materials should immediately start producing smoke. Use tongs to push away any ash when you would like to add more materials. The charcoal tablet should be left to burn out withing the vessel.

Things to remember
Burning sage is a powerful ritual that Indigenous communities have been using to clear negative energy for thousands of years. If you’re going to burn sage in your own home, office, or apartment, be sure to do so safely and with respect for others and the origins of this sacred practice.
