Historically Speaking

Black Tourmaline has a rich history dating back thousands of years and has been used by various cultures for its protective properties. The ancient Egyptians, for example, believed that Black Tourmaline had the power to ward off negative energies and bring balance to their lives.

Native American tribes also used Tourmaline to help the wearer connect with the earth and protect them from harm and pink and green tourmaline were used as funeral gifts.

In the 19th century, Black Tourmaline was used in the treatment of various ailments such as rheumatism, arthritis, and skin diseases. It was believed that the mineral could help to alleviate pain and improve the overall health of the patient. The healing properties of Black Tourmaline were so highly valued that it was even used by doctors in Europe and America to treat a variety of illnesses.

Brightly colored Tourmalines were brought to Europe in great quantities by the Dutch East India Company to satisfy a demand for curiosities and gems. Tourmaline was sometimes called the “Ceylonese Magnet” because it could attract and then repel hot ashes due to its pyroelectric properties. During the 19th century, chemists used tourmalines to polarize light by shining rays onto a cut and polished surface of the gem.

Scientifically Speaking

Tourmaline (TOOR-mə-lin, -leen) is a crystalline silicate mineral group in which boron is compounded with elements such as aluminum, iron, magnesium, sodium, lithium, or potassium. Black Tourmaline is commonly found in trigonal crystal systems and is made up of Sodium Iron Aluminum Borate Silicate.

Gem and specimen tourmaline is mined chiefly in Brazil and parts of Africa, including Tanzania, Nigeria, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Malawi, and Namibia. It is also mined in Asia, notably in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Indonesia as well as in Sri Lanka and India. Specimens have been found in the United States, with the first discoveries in 1822, in the state of Maine. California became a large producer of tourmaline in the early 1900’s. The Maine deposits tend to produce crystals in raspberry (pink-red) as well as minty greens. The California deposits are known for bright pinks, as well as bicolor.
